Our state-of-the-art sawmill in Axis, Alabama officially opened at the end of 2024. This milestone not only marks a major leap forward for Canfor, but also respects the legacy of the Mobile and Jackson sawmills that came before.
A bold investment in the future.
The new Axis sawmill showcases innovative technology designed to elevate workplace safety and efficiency, featuring top-tier wood-processing equipment, advanced software, automation systems, artificial intelligence optimization and our new Digital Manufacturing platform.
Canfor’s commitment to sustainability – embedded throughout our operations, from the forest to the finished product and beyond – is made clear through inclusion of a biomass-fueled lumber drying system that supports our decarbonization goals.

Growing our business, growing communities.
Axis sawmill is the result of a strategic decision to consolidate Canfor’s regional operations in Alabama at modern, sustainable facilities.
With Axis, Canfor’s regional manufacturing platform will grow by 100 million board feet of production capacity, while securing long-term jobs for people that live in our communities.
“The Mobile County Commission is pleased to see Canfor make this significant business investment in north Mobile County. The new sawmill complex will incorporate cutting-edge technology in an industry that has played a very important role historically in our state and local economies. We look forward to their continued growth,” said Commission President Connie Hudson.
With operations now full steam ahead, the Axis sawmill employs 130 people who are working safely every day to produce low-carbon forest products that are building a better future.
Operating in Alabama for over ten years.
Canfor acquired Scotch Gulf Lumber in 2013. The Stimpson family, who owned Scotch Gulf, has been involved in Alabama's sawmilling industry for over 100 years and continues to be involved with Canfor. With our expansion at Axis, Canfor is proud to carry this legacy forward for generations to come.
