Our managed forests are certified to Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) or Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Forest Management Standards.
SFI marks are registered marks owned by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
The SFI sustainable forest management and fibre sourcing standards are endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The world’s largest forest certification organization, PEFC recognizes national or regional certification standards that meet their rigorous requirements based on international criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management.

PEFC Chain of Custody
Canfor has 10 sawmills and 1 chip plant certified to the PEFC chain of custody standard. PEFC chain of custody certification gives our customers confidence that Canfor products come from well-managed forests. By adhering to the chain of custody, Canfor commits to tracking every unit of lumber that comes from our mills from the forest of origin and through every step of the manufacturing process.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
FSC is an international certification and labelling system dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests. Canfor’s Radium and Elko sawmills and the Skookumchuk Chipper are certified under our Multisite Chain of Custody & Controlled Wood Certificate KF-CoC/CW-001058. In addition, a portion of the Kootenay Division’s tenure is certified under KF-FM/COC-001059.

FSC Chain of Custody
We ensure our fiber supplies originate from areas that are low-risk sources and ensure they are not sourced from any of the 6 requirements below:
- Illegally harvested wood
- Wood harvested in violation of traditional and human rights
- Wood from forests in which high conservation values are threatened by management activities
- Wood from forests being converted to plantations and non-forest use
- Wood from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted
- No wood from suppliers who are in violation of any of the ILO Core Conventions

SFI is a leading nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable forest management through certification standards, conservation partnerships and community engagement. SFI works to ensure forests are responsibly managed to meet environmental, social, and economic needs—today and for future generations. Its standards address key issues like biodiversity, climate resilience, water quality and Indigenous rights, supporting a strong fiber supply chain while maintaining healthy, thriving forest ecosystems across North America.

Canfor Southern Pine
Canfor Southern Pine (CSP) is committed to implementing and achieving the SFI Standard (2022 Standard) in its procurement of wood to supply its manufacturing facilities across the US South. SFI marks are registered marks owned by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc.
CSP promotes scientifically, environmentally, socially and economically sustainable forestry practices to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This is accomplished by practicing and promoting a land stewardship ethic, which integrates the reforestation, growing and harvesting of trees for useful products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, biological diversity, wildlife and aquatic habitat, recreation and aesthetics.
CSP’s SFI Policy is to promote the Principles of Sustainable Forest Management including: practicing sustainable forestry, employing responsible practices, regenerating the forest and maintaining its productive capacity, protecting and maintaining long-term forest and soil productivity, protecting water resources, protecting special sites and biological diversity, complying with legal requirements, managing visual impacts and providing recreational opportunities for the public, promoting sustainable forestry among landowners, supporting forestry research, training and education, promoting community involvement and transparency and continually improving forest practices.
CSP is committed to compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, including social laws, and takes appropriate steps to comply. It also promotes forest certification with family forest owners and encourages loggers to participate in appropriate logger training programs.
To implement and achieve the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard Principles, Objectives, Performance Measures and Indicators; CSP has developed and adopted programs and plans to guide its wood procurement activities. These programs and plans are contained in the SFI Indicators and Evidence Matrix and accompanying SFI Implementation Programs.
The company is also committed to annually review the effectiveness of its SFI policies and programs and to continually improve performance.

American Tree Farm System
CSP is also committed to supporting The American Tree Farm System® (ATFS), which is a program of the American Forest Foundation that supports sustainable forestry on family-owned lands. Through certification, education and community, ATFS helps small landowners manage their forests responsibly—protecting wildlife habitat, water quality and forest health while also supporting local economies and recreation.

International Organization for standardization (ISO)
Our 2 Canfor Pulp facilities in Prince George are certified to both ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environment standards to ensure consistent product quality and continuous improvement in our environmental performance.

EcoVadis
Canfor Pulp was assessed by EcoVadis and achieved a silver medal in 2023. EcoVadis employs a comprehensive rating methodology that evaluates the quality of a company’s sustainability management system, considering its policies, actions, and results. This methodology assesses key indicators across four themes: Environment, Labour and Human Rights Practices, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.

Food grade certifications
As a specialty producer, Canfor pulps are widely used in a variety of applications including food containment products. To ensure compliance with the associated health and safety regulations Canfor pulps are evaluated by independent labs for food grade certification.

Certification for use in electrical components and equipment
Canfor pulps are tested by an independent certification body to ensure compliance with the European Union's Directives 2011/65/EU on the restriction of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment.
