Sustainable Forestry
Practicing sustainable forestry.
We are committed to practicing leading sustainable forestry that will result in resilient, productive and biodiverse forests. We also commit to building collaborative partnerships and developing innovative solutions to contribute positively to forest health and climate change mitigation.
Our approach.
At Canfor, sustainable forestry is integrated into our business operations; we are guided by our Sustainable Forest Management Commitments. In Canada, we directly manage forest tenures where we source wood. We also procure chips and fibre from external suppliers. In the US and Sweden, we procure wood from private timberland owners and other fibre suppliers.
Our forests are carefully managed and certified.
Our managed forests are certified to SFI or FSC Forest Management Standards, including PEFC Chain of Custody certification, and meet all regulatory requirements set by government authorities.
We have a robust forest management system in place.
Our sustainable forest management system and forest management plans guide our operations. We ensure forest harvesting aligns with government’s regulatory requirements and Canfor’s strict operational requirements and standards.
Forest regeneration is a key component of our work.
We reforest areas that we harvest to emulate natural biodiversity. Our foresters continually improve our silviculture methods to promote healthy, resilient forests.
We aim to conserve wildlife habitats and maintain biodiversity.
Maintaining biodiversity and wildlife habitat is an integral part of sustainable forest management.
We aim to minimize soil erosion and sedimentation.
We implement best management practices to conserve water quality and fish habitat, and to minimize erosion and sedimentation.
We take a proactive approach to wildfire risk.
We have a robust fire prevention and suppression program and proactively prevent fires and reduce their severity.
Management of old growth forests is done through thoughtful consultation.
We take a balanced approach to responsibly managing BC’s old growth forests and work closely with Indigenous Nations where we operate.
Suppliers are encouraged to practice sustainable forestry.
We encourage our suppliers to follow sustainable forestry practices by providing them with information and assistance.
