Transforming innovative concepts into reality.

From innovative building materials, to biofuels, to wood-based plastic alternatives, our bio-innovation team is focused on transforming innovative concepts into reality for the benefit of our customers and the planet.

Canfor is investigating commercialization of natural fibre-based biocomposite products as a renewable, low-carbon alternative to plastics. The conventional manufacturing approach involves compounding wood residuals with thermoplastic polymers through extrusion or through one-step compounding and compression molding. This process requires pretreatment of residuals, including drying and sizing, which is often costly. Canfor is exploring innovative solutions to compound natural fibres with polymers, aiming to minimize the need for extensive pre-treatment.

Additionally, Canfor is developing a strong, compostable, natural fibre-reinforced biocomposite laminate from paper that has broad applications across industries such as packaging, construction and automotive.

Beyond biocomposites, Canfor is exploring other bioproduct opportunities such as biochar and syngas.
