Canfor Southern Pine History

The businesses which are now part of Canfor Southern Pine have deep roots in the lumber industry of the south. The Wall, Sledge, Singleton, and Campbell families and joined together with their diverse backgrounds in the forest products business to build a sawmill near Conway, SC in 1957. Joe Singleton became the President of the Company and headed up the business until his death in 1985 at which time he was succeeded by his son Mack.

During 1983 a new modern sawmill was built in Camden, SC in partnership with Stora of Sweden. A few years later it became a wholly owned operation of New South. Later, in 1992, a molding and finger-jointed stud facility was constructed in Marion, SC and in 1999 the company acquired a third sawmill facility in Graham, NC.

Over the years, New South incorporated treating facilities at both the Conway and Camden sawmills. They also developed a common carrier trucking company under the name of New South Express that operates over 50 trucks.

New South Companies was acquired by Canfor in 2006. Mack Singleton continued as president until his retirement in 2009 and was succeeded in this role by Doug Warstler who had joined the company in 2000 as Chief Financial Officer.
