Lumber Operations

Since 2007, Canfor has invested in thermal energy systems to replace fossil fuels such as natural gas with biomass, which is carbon neutral and provides a consistent, reliable and renewable source of energy.

With the installation of a biomass-fired thermal energy system and kiln at our Elko Mill in 2014, all of our Canadian sawmills are using biomass from lumber manufacturing residuals for heat and to dry lumber.

By using bark and planer shaving wood residuals to generate clean energy, we have significantly reduced, and in some cases eliminated, our reliance on natural gas. This also decreases our greenhouse gas emissions, improves air quality, reduces our mill conversion costs and makes more efficient use of wood fibre.
